What Is a Terrace Enclosure and How Does It Work?

Enclosing a terrace means closing a terrace or balcony with glass, guillotine glass or pergola systems so it can be used in all four seasons. It is not a single product but a family of solutions chosen to suit the need.

There are three main approaches: pergola systems that cover only the top, glass systems that close the sides, and full enclosures combining the two. If thermal insulation is wanted, the solution becomes a winter garden. Closing the sides of an existing pergola later is possible in most cases.

Systems That Cover the Top

Bioclimatic pergola, rolling roof and motorised pergola awning. All give shade and rain protection; which one fits depends on whether the sky should open and on the budget.

  • Bioclimatic pergola: rotating louvres, watertight when closed
  • Rolling roof: louvres slide aside, the sky opens completely
  • Motorised awning: fabric cover, the most economical shading

Systems That Close the Sides

Guillotine glass, sliding glass and zip screens. If it is only wind you want to stop, a zip screen is enough; if the space is to be heated in winter, glass systems are required.

Full Enclosure and Insulation

When roof cover and side enclosure are planned together, the space is usable all year. If thermal insulation is wanted too, the solution becomes a winter garden.

The Decision

Choosing the Right System Sets the Cost

If you only want shade and rain protection, a bioclimatic pergola is enough; if wind is also to be stopped, a zip screen is added; if the space is used in winter, glass systems or a winter garden are needed. We work through these three scenarios together during the survey.

Can the sides of my existing pergola be closed?

In most cases yes, but the load-bearing sections and connection points of the existing structure have to be examined. A zip screen is the easiest addition; glass systems demand a stronger structure. We assess the existing structure free of charge during the survey.

Pricing

How Is the Price of a Terrace Enclosure Set?

The price cannot be quoted from a ready list; the chosen system, dimensions, material quality and installation conditions differ in every project. Two installations of the same area can differ several times over in cost purely through the choice of system.

01

The System You Choose

This is the decision that drives the price most: there is a several-fold cost difference between a zip screen and a winter garden.

02

Area and Span

A wide span requires heavier profiles and strengthened connections; unit cost does not rise linearly.

03

Type of Roof Cover

There is a marked cost difference between a bioclimatic pergola, a rolling roof and a motorised awning.

04

Type of Side Enclosure

A zip screen is the most economical; guillotine glass and insulated glazing are the most expensive.

05

Insulation Requirement

If heating is planned for winter, double glazing and thermal break profiles are required — which moves the solution into winter garden territory.

06

Ground and Installation Conditions

Ground type, mounting height, crane requirements and access difficulty change labour time.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Terrace Enclosures

Which system suits a terrace enclosure best?

The choice depends on how you will use the space. If you only want shade and rain protection, a bioclimatic pergola is enough. If wind is also to be stopped, a zip screen is added. If the space is to be heated in winter, guillotine glass, sliding glass or a winter garden is required.

Do I need permission to enclose a terrace?

Whether a permit is required depends on the nature of the structure, the installation, the planning status of the plot and the assessment of the relevant municipality. Demountable pergolas and glass systems usually do not require a permit; if an enclosed, insulated volume is being created, we recommend checking with the municipality.

Is enclosing a balcony the same as enclosing a terrace?

The systems are technically similar but the scale differs. Enclosing a balcony usually needs only a glass system; a terrace also needs a roof cover. On balconies, guillotine glass and sliding glass are the most common solutions.

How long does the work take?

It depends on the system, the dimensions and the ground conditions. A standard glass installation is usually finished in a day; a full enclosure including a pergola in one to two days. The exact duration is stated in the quotation after the survey.

Can the sides of my existing pergola be closed?

In most cases yes, but the load-bearing sections and connection points of the existing structure have to be examined. A zip screen is the easiest addition; glass systems demand a stronger structure. We assess the existing structure free of charge during the survey.
