What Is Guillotine Glass and How Does It Work?
Guillotine glass is a balcony and terrace enclosure system in which glass panels move vertically up and down. The panels run on twin tracks inside purpose-made aluminium profiles and lock at any height; the name comes from that vertical movement.
The system relies on 6–10 mm tempered safety glass or insulated glass panels moving inside twin tracks on stainless steel bearings. Panels are raised by a spring-assisted, hydraulically damped or motorised mechanism. Closed, a double seal engages and the area is protected from wind.
Tempered Glass and Double Seals
Panels are made from 6, 8 or 10 mm tempered safety glass; where thermal insulation matters, 4+12+4 or 5+16+5 mm insulated glass is used instead. A double seal engages in the closed position.

Three Mechanism Options
The spring-assisted system needs no electricity and is the most economical. The hydraulically damped system brings the panel to a soft stop. On motorised systems the panels move by remote, driven by a 200–400W motor sized to panel weight.
The Whole Opening Stays Clear
Because the panels rise, no stack of glass builds up at one side; the full opening remains usable. Panel height runs from 2.4 to 3.5 metres depending on the system, and width from 60 to 100 cm depending on glass thickness.
Insulation and Resistance Figures
With insulated glass the U-value drops to around 1.1 W/m²K and the space becomes usable with heating in winter. Acoustic insulation ranges from 28 to 38 dB depending on glass type.

What guillotine glass offers over sliding glass is that nothing stacks to one side when it opens and the opening is completely clear. With insulated glass, thermal and acoustic insulation improve markedly and the space becomes usable in winter.

If a completely clear opening and an uninterrupted view matter to you, guillotine glass is the right choice. If budget is the priority and panels stacking to one side is not a problem, sliding glass costs less.

How Is the Price of Guillotine Glass Set?
Guillotine glass cannot be priced from a ready list; size, glass type, mechanism and installation conditions differ in every project. Two installations of the same area can cost noticeably differently because of glass thickness and access difficulty.

Frequently Asked Questions About Guillotine Glass
Does guillotine glass rattle in the wind?
A correctly installed system with sound seals does not rattle. Noise usually comes from worn seals or dirt in the tracks. The system uses double seals, and cleaning the tracks once a year is enough.
Do motorised panels open during a power cut?
On motorised systems the panels stay where they are during a power cut. An emergency crank can be added to the mechanism for manual operation. Spring-assisted and hydraulically damped models need no electricity at all, so a power cut does not affect them.
Does guillotine glass provide thermal insulation?
With single glazing, insulation is limited; the U-value sits around 5.7 W/m²K. With insulated glass it drops to 1.1–2.8 W/m²K and the space becomes usable with heating in winter. If heating is planned, we recommend insulated glass.
What is the maximum panel height?
Depending on the system, panel heights between 2.4 and 3.5 metres are possible. Panel width runs from 60 to 100 cm depending on glass thickness. Wider openings use several panels side by side, with intermediate posts planned in.
Are there child safety measures?
Yes. Alongside single or multi-point locking, a child safety lock is available. On motorised models, obstacle detection stops movement when something is in the panel's path. We recommend keeping the remote out of children's reach.
What warranty comes with guillotine glass?
The system as a whole carries a 2-year warranty. The mechanism, motor and powder coating are covered for 5 years. Installation workmanship is covered separately.
