Aluminium pergola systems need little maintenance. The mechanism runs on maintenance-free bearings, so no periodic lubrication is required. Cleaning the louvres, rails and gutter system with water once a year is enough in most installations.
Why Maintenance Matters
Aluminium does not rust or rot, so the structure is long-lived on its own. The purpose of maintenance is not protecting the structure but keeping the moving parts and the drainage system working. The cost of neglected maintenance comes back as early parts replacement.
In practice the two most common problems share one root: a blocked gutter and a dirty rail. Both are entirely prevented by a simple annual clean.
Users usually describe the symptom incorrectly: "the glass got heavy" or "the system is making noise". Almost always the cause is rail contamination or seal wear.
Annual Checklist
The list below covers what should be done once a year on a standard residential installation. All of it takes under an hour and needs no special tools. In coastal installations this list should be applied twice a year.
Doing this at the turn of the season, preferably in autumn, makes most sense: the dust accumulated over summer is cleared and the system goes into winter rain ready.
- Louvre surfaces: clean with water and a soft brush, no abrasives
- Gutters and drainage channels: clear leaves, dust and sediment
- In-column drainage outlet: check for blockage by pouring water through
- Glass system rails: wipe with a damp cloth, leave no grit in the rail
- Seals: visual check for hardening and cracks
- Screws and fixings: visual check for loosening
- Sensor surfaces: clean with a damp cloth and run a trigger test
- Remote battery: replace every two years
Gutters and Drainage: The Critical Item

In systems installed under trees, leaf build-up is fast and cleaning twice a year may be needed. The sign of a blockage is water dripping from a point on the profile rather than from the base of the column during rain.
The simplest way to test the outlet is to pour a bucket of water into the gutter and watch whether it comes out at the base of the column.
Maintaining Glass Systems
In glass systems maintenance focuses on rails and seals. Grit and dust in the rail make the panel bind and tire the wheel bearings over time. A simple wipe with a damp cloth prevents the problem entirely.
Rail Cleaning
Use a damp cloth rather than a vacuum or compressed air; dust should not be pushed into the base of the rail. Grains of sand build up especially fast near the sea and are the most abrasive factor.
Seal Checks
A hardened or cracked seal both breaks the seal and causes noise in wind. Seals are replaced panel by panel at low cost; postponing creates secondary problems on the glass surface and in the profile.
Glass Surfaces
Ordinary glass cleaner is enough. Do not use abrasive pads or solvents; on coated glass the coating is damaged. For access to the outer face on upper floors, cleanable guillotine glass systems exist.
Extra Precautions Near the Sea
Salt air does not corrode aluminium directly but builds up on the surface and stresses the coating and the stainless steel components. In coastal installations a fresh-water rinse twice a year noticeably extends the life of the system.
- Rinse frequency: at least twice a year, preferably at the start and end of the season
- Pay particular attention to salt build-up on metal components such as screws and shafts
- Powder coating at 80-100 microns is salt resistant when correctly applied
- Remote and sensor cabling should be checked visually for moisture ingress
What Not to Do
Mistakes made during maintenance can be more damaging than skipping maintenance. The four practices below are the most common user-caused damage we encounter on service calls.
Where snow load is involved, the system should be kept closed and the load cleared mechanically. Trying to shed snow by forcing the motor triggers obstacle detection and, repeated, tires the mechanism.

- Using abrasive pads or solvents: harms the coating layer
- Sealing drainage holes with silicone: causes water to collect in the profile
- Trying to open the system while snow has accumulated: overloads the motor
A Seasonal Maintenance Rhythm
Spreading maintenance across the seasons rather than piling it into one day is both easier and more effective. Gutter cleaning after leaf fall in autumn, a general check after winter in spring, and a sensor test at the start of summer form a sensible rhythm.
Autumn — Preparing for Winter
Once leaf fall is complete, the gutters and drainage channels are cleared. This ensures winter rain drains without problems and reduces freezing risk. On systems under trees this step must not be skipped.
Spring — Post-Winter Check
Look for hardening in the seals, loosening at fixings and damage to the profile surface. Run a full movement test on a system that stayed closed all winter; uneven louvre closing shows up at this stage.
Early Summer — Sensor and Usage Test
Drip water on the rain sensor to test triggering. Check the remote battery. This test before the heavy-use season prevents surprises mid-season.
When to Call Service
User maintenance is limited to cleaning. Friction noise from the mechanism, louvres that do not close evenly, or a motor that hesitates all call for service. Caught early, these symptoms are resolved with minor adjustments.
